Although not an exhaustive list, when you mention major marathons to any runner, they are all going to immediately think of the bix six. These races, held in major cities across the world, attract the best runners from all corners of the globe and weekend warriors alike. If you're interested in participating in any of these marathons, read on to find out more about each race and how to apply. 

The Six Major Marathons 

Here are the six major marathons in the world, along with some information on each race. 

1. Tokyo Marathon 

The Tokyo Marathon, held in February, is one of the newest races in the World Marathon Majors series, having only started in 2007. The race is famous for its flat course and scenic views, as it takes runners through some of Tokyo's most iconic landmarks. To participate in the Tokyo Marathon, you can either apply through the lottery system or through a charity organization. 

2. Boston Marathon 

The Boston Marathon is held annually on Patriots Day in April. The race is known for its challenging hills and is considered one of the most prestigious marathons in the world. To participate, you have to meet the qualifying standards for your age group, which vary depending on gender and age.

3. London Marathon 

The London Marathon is held in April and is the largest marathon in the world, with over 40,000 runners participating every year. The race passes through some of London's most iconic landmarks, including the Tower Bridge and the London Eye. To participate, you can either apply through the ballot system or through a charity organization. 

4. Berlin Marathon 

The Berlin Marathon, held in September, is one of the fastest marathons of the six, with several world records being set on its flat course. The race is known for its lively atmosphere and scenic views, as it takes runners through some of Berlin's most famous landmarks. To participate, you can either apply through the lottery system or through a tour operator. \

5. Chicago Marathon 

The Chicago Marathon is held in October and is known for its flat course. The race takes runners through Chicago's most famous neighborhoods, including Chinatown and Little Italy. To participate, you can either apply through the lottery system or through a charity organization. 

6. New York City Marathon 

The New York City Marathon, held in November, is the largest marathon in the world, with over 50,000 runners participating every year. The race takes runners through all five boroughs of New York City, with the finish line in Central Park. To participate, you can either apply through the lottery system or through a charity organization.
